A Chat with Kira Smelser

What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

Hit the snooze button a few times – yes, I’m one of those.

An alarm clock perched on a stack of books, a coffee cup nearby.

Extrovert, introvert, or ambivert?

I would say that I am an ambivert.

How introverted or extroverted I am is very easily impacted by the people around me at the time and how comfortable I feel in the overall situation. I have had people tell me I am very shy and have also had people tell me I am one of the most extroverted people they have met.

What’s your “Comfort TV” show?

New Girl!

You have to listen to only one album for the rest of your life: which is it?

Twelve Carat Toothache, by Post Malone.

If you were to make the front page of the New York Times, what would you hope it was for?

This is very unrealistic given my educational background, but finding a cure for cancer. During my time working for a nonprofit that supported children and families affected by cancer, I saw the devastating effect it has on those diagnosed and those they are close to.

If you had to stick to the career you wanted when you were five years old, what would you be doing now?

I would be a published author.

My mom was a big supporter of reading when I was growing up. I was either listening to her read to me or listening to a book on tape (remember those, fellow Millennials?). When I was old enough to read and write myself, it was my favorite pastime. Still is!

When you’ve had a bad day, what’s your go-to mood improver?

A shower! It feels like a cleansing of sorts; washing off the bad day or situation.

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what non-charitable, ridiculous, just-for-you thing would you buy?

My own personal movie theater with reclining seats and unlimited movie theater popcorn. I love seeing movies on the big screen.
